Qualifications

  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and offers suggestions/recommendations.
  • Assists with orientation of new staff.
  • Attends unit/departmental meetings/in-services at least 75% of the time or as assigned.
  • Demonstrates acceptable attendance and punctuality per policy.
  • Completes assigned responsibilities in an efficient, timely manner.
  • Utilizes unit supplies in a cost-conscious manner.
  • Exhibits effective organizational skills to reduce overuse of man-hours.

  • Treats staff, patients, and families with respect.
  • Utilizes AIDET-P (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) in patient interactions.
  • Communicates directions, answers, and information clearly and in a timely manner to patients, families, visitors, physicians, and staff.
  • Collaborates with other members of the health team regarding patient care needs and responsibilities.
  • Practices in a manner consistent with safety principles, OSHA guidelines, and infection control guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Attends to patient care needs, including answering call lights, bathing, toileting, turning, and passing ice water.
  • Obtains and correctly labels venous puncture specimens.
  • Correctly applies EKG leads and runs 12-lead EKGs as requested.
  • Applies telemetry leads as ordered.
  • Performs hourly rounding and ensures safety measures (e.g., bed/chair alarms, safe room environment without trip hazards).
  • Performs bedside shift report.
  • Utilizes AIDET-P in patient interactions.
  • Implements fall prevention measures.
  • Obtains vital signs, blood glucose, hematests, weights, and accurate intake and output.
  • Maintains appropriate hand hygiene compliance per policy.
  • Follows appropriate isolation practices.
  • Maintains a clean patient environment, including linen changes, trash disposal, and cleaning.
  • Maintains cleanliness of soiled utility rooms and equipment.
  • Stocks rooms with supplies as needed.
  • Documents care provided and charges for appropriate items per nursing policy and procedure.
  • Maintains patient safety during ambulation, transfers, and repositioning.
  • Uses time not consumed by patient care to maintain the unit (cleaning, stocking, uncluttering).
  • May include orientation with a Registered Nurse (RN) in the last semester of clinicals.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program/course of study, which upon completion will qualify for RN State Board Examination.
  • Completed one semester of clinicals.
  • Must be in the last semester of the nursing program.
  • Provides proof of continued enrollment in an accredited school of nursing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CPR certification.
  • Phlebotomy training and EKG training preferred.

Mandatory Continuing Education

  • Annual department-specific and hospital-wide mandatories (Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance, Infection Control).
  • Education required by regulatory, accreditation bodies, scope of practice, and/or Hancock Regional Hospital.
