About the role

Want to combine data, coding, and energy markets in one internship? Join ISO New England’s Internal Market Monitoring team and help analyze complex electricity market data and turn it into dynamic dashboards and clear visualizations. You’ll work with economists, engineers, and data scientists to monitor market behavior, identify trends, and support fair and efficient markets. This internship is perfect for students who love data analysis, visualization, and problem-solving. You’ll gain hands-on experience in energy markets, learn how to communicate insights to management, and see how your work helps shape New England’s transition to cleaner, smarter energy systems.

The Internal Market Monitoring (IMM) Group protects both consumers and market participants in New England’s wholesale electricity markets. The team mitigates the impacts of uncompetitive bidding, identifies market design issues and potential manipulation, and evaluates overall market performance. IMM brings together expertise in economics, engineering, financial analysis, data science, and law to ensure fair and efficient electricity markets.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to monitor wholesale electricity outcomes and market participant behavior.
  • Pull complex market data, analyze outputs, and develop dynamic dashboards and visualizations to communicate findings.
  • Research and document new methodologies, tools, and functionalities to support team understanding and efficiency.
  • Present insights and visualizations to other groups or management in clear, easy-to-understand formats.
  • Learn about electricity markets, ISO New England’s operations, and the role of market monitoring in supporting clean and efficient markets.

This internship gives you the chance to support a priority IMM project that the department cannot complete due to current workload constraints. While you learn about electricity markets and market data, the team gains insight into how you work, think, and approach problem‑solving, providing a potential pathway for future opportunities within the group. Your work in analyzing market results and participant behavior will provide real value, helping IMM better understand market performance and inform future decision‑making.
