Student Intern - Materials Science & Engineering

About the role

The Y-12 National Security Complex is recruiting for summer 2027 internship opportunities in Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Fire Protection, Mechanical, Nuclear, and other disciplines) and Science (Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and other disciplines). The internship is a 10‑ to 12‑week program offering challenging assignments, projects, and career‑development workshops to enhance professional growth. The program is scheduled to run from May 24, 2027 through July 29, 2027, and is based in Oak Ridge, TN. Interns will receive a competitive salary based on discipline and academic class standing, and the position remains open until all candidates are identified.

Requirements

• Be working toward or have completed a degree in Engineering or a relevant Physical Science (Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or similar) from an EAC‑ABET accredited program in the United States, or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or ABET‑listed substantially equivalent programs.
• Students who have graduated are eligible up to two years post‑graduation.
• Have completed at least the sophomore year of college.
• Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher.
• Be a United States Citizen.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance (position may require entry into Materials Access Areas and participation in the Human Reliability Program, including a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph if required).
• Meet medical requirements as applicable; CNS is a drug‑free workplace and requires a pre‑placement physical, drug screening, and background investigation.
• Be subject to random drug testing without advance notice.
