About the role

This position is responsible for co-guiding the activities of Student Government and fostering an atmosphere based on democratic principles which promotes and trains students in leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret Student Government's mission and purpose to the students, staff and administration.
  • Ensure that the rights of all students are respected.
  • Demonstrate and model democratic procedures.
  • Supervise the nomination and election of Student Government officers and members in cooperation with the Student Activities Coordinator.
  • Ensure that the provisions of the Student Government constitution and by-laws are carried out in spirit as well as form.
  • Provide advice and counsel to executive officers of Student Government.
  • Oversee all joint session meetings and act in advisory capacity at such meetings.
  • Oversee and coordinate all activities of class caucuses and standing committees in cooperation with sponsors of such committees/caucuses.
  • Supervise the coordination and execution of Homecoming-related events and activities in cooperation with all caucuses and committees.
  • Coordinate student membership in the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils (PASC).
  • Facilitate student participation and activities in the PASC and attend PASC functions; accompany/chaperone students on PASC events.
  • Provide recognition for participants and publicity for activities.
  • Supervise the cleaning, storing and care of all equipment and supplies.
  • Arrange for the use of school facilities for Student Government activities.
  • Monitor and supervise Student Government budget and accounts in accordance with all District policies and procedures.
  • Supervise students during Student Government activities and provide for chaperones as needed.
  • Maintain student discipline in accordance with the student Code of Conduct and all other District policies.
  • Assist students to coordinate planning for the senior dinner dance.
  • Attend all Student Government functions and activities.
  • Facilitate the reproduction of any materials needed for Student Council projects.
  • Maintain communications with parents of participants as needed.
  • Attend faculty sponsor meetings.
  • Prepare and submit end-of-year report and summary to the Student Activities Coordinator.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with District Administration, Student Activities Coordinator, staff, students and community.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises students participating in this program.
  • Directs activities of any program volunteers.

Requirements

  • Experience in or knowledge of this program or activity is desirable.
  • Current criminal record and child abuse clearances required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating or procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, their parents or employees of the district.
  • Ability to communicate in a positive way with members of the media.
  • Basic computer skills in word processing and database are helpful.
  • Exhibit qualities of leadership and organizational ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and stand. Occasionally the employee will sit and may run.
  • The employee will frequently bend or twist at the trunk while performing the duties of this job.
  • The employee may also frequently squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, reach forward, and repeat the same hand motion many times.
  • Moderate lifting of equipment weighing between 10-50 pounds may be necessary.
  • The specific vision requirements of the job include good depth perception and occasionally being able to see objects/persons at a distance.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee frequently is required to hear conversation in a quiet as well as a noisy environment and be able to tell where a sound is coming from.
  • The employee must be able to communicate to the students in order to give directions.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will continuously work inside or outside depending on the event.
  • Occasionally the employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers.
  • The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of the students.
  • The noise level will vary from quiet to loud.
