Under the supervision of the Assistant Director—Recreational Sports Programs and Facility Operations, the Fitness Instructor teaches a variety of classes within the Group Exercise and Instructional Class Program.
Responsibilities
- Lead exercise classes and instructional sessions.
- Develop individual class lesson plans and maintain familiarity with various class formats.
- Supervise class participants and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Maintain familiarity with evacuation plans for the work area.
- Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and trainings.
- Provide quality customer service for staff and members.
- Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers.
- Adhere to and enforce all PEAC departmental policies and procedures.
- Commit to student development and leadership.
- Maintain a clean and inviting instructional area.
- Comply with mandated reporter requirements under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled Cal Poly student with a minimum of 6 units (4 units for graduate students).
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, muscular function, exercise program implementation, safe group exercise, or instructional procedures.
- Professional instructor certification in a related field or prior training required.
- Extensive knowledge of classes being taught.
- Highly organized with strong planning skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Current American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED (required within 30 days of hire; training provided).
- Understanding of current trends in area of expertise.
- Previous experience supervising participants in an instructional environment.
- Ability to learn new formats.
- Consistent attendance at continuing education workshops, lectures, and conferences.
Benefits
- Hourly pay range: $18.00–$32.00 for instruction time (based on experience).
- Hourly rate of $16.90 for training and meeting time.
- Maximum of 20 hours per week.
Schedule
- May require early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Minimum work availability beginning Fall 2026.
This position is based at the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA, and is considered "at-will" employment.
