Student Employment - South Kearns Elementary MLL (multi-language learners) Student Tutor(Part-Time)
Job Summary
Multi-Language Learners (MLLs), also known as English as a Second Language (ESL) students, face unique challenges that require targeted support. Our goal is to help these K-5 students progress their English skills and overcome academic barriers. This role involves working with small groups of students to enhance their English proficiency.
About the Role
The Tutor position at South Kearns Elementary aims to provide a supportive environment for MLLs, recognizing and valuing their linguistic and cultural assets. The role includes organizing small group sessions, preparing lessons and materials, and working closely with teachers to identify students who need additional support.
Responsibilities
- Meet with small groups of K-5th-grade students to tutor them in rudimentary English skills.
- Organize and lead small group sessions based on teacher recommendations.
- Prepare lessons and materials tailored to the needs of the students.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and other staff to ensure comprehensive support for MLLs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Desire to work with elementary-age students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor.
- Basic computer skills for lesson preparation and communication.
Qualifications
- Must have an SLCC Federal Work-Study award through SLCC's Financial Aid office.
- Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.
- Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 hours a week during the semester.
- Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.
- Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using preferred transportation methods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding of the English language and usage.
- Spanish speaking a plus, but not required.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, and/or mentoring.
- Experience working with 3-6-year-old children.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and lead groups of diverse representation in effective learning.
Program Associates
Program Associates may create their own work schedules within available hours at their school sites.
