About the role

The Academic Success Program (ASP) is an intervention designed to assist JMU students facing academic and personal challenges. Peer Instructors (PIs) facilitate workshops and support students through various topics.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate workshops on a rotating schedule for 10 weeks, covering topics like active learning exercises, presentations, and handouts.
  • Work with an assigned caseload of 5-8 students to identify individual needs and build respective compliance plans.
  • Meet with each student 3-4 times per semester to provide support and track progress.
  • Facilitate Study Hall sessions and meet with the Program Coordinator monthly to debrief from meetings with students.
  • Positively represent JMU and the Academic Student Services Office.

Qualifications

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and professional conversation.
  • Must be in good disciplinary and academic standing with JMU.
  • Must be degree-seeking, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
  • Must participate in all required ASP meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
  • Attend a 1-day training at the beginning of the Fall 2025 semester.
