Student Educational Services Aide, USDB
Key Responsibilities
- Provide field support to blind and visually impaired students who may also have additional disabilities or needs.
- Provide direct supportive instruction to blind and visually impaired students without daily supervision/intervention of assigned Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI).
- Provide one-on-one educational support and assistance to students.
- Provide braille instruction, both contracted and uncontracted.
- Provide braille and tactile graphic material preparation for all levels of students (academic to severe).
- Aids in determining/distinguishing students’ needs and provides instruction in the proper use of low vision aids, classroom accommodations, etc.
- Meet with classroom teachers, administrators, and parents, when appropriate/as directed by TVI, and assists the TVI in meeting the requirements of the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Travel from school to school with students who are blind and visually impaired attending their neighborhood schools.
- Assist the student in accessing content or curriculum in their classrooms using technology or tools.
Qualifications
- The Ideal Candidate Must Or Be Willing To Willingness to learn and receive training on the job.
- Experience as an educational aide, paraprofessional, or other related teaching experience.
- Learn both contracted and uncontracted Braille. This is not an expectation at the outset of employment.
- Learn the necessary technology for the blind such as Jaws, Braillenote, and other V.I. equipment, and educational needs specific to blind/visually impaired students.
- Ability to follow teacher’s directions and lesson plans, transcribe and produce student materials.
- Work independently.
- Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism.
- Communicate clearly and effectively.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Within one year of hire must pass a braille literacy test, contracted and uncontracted with an 85% or better score.

Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack, etc. (Risks are related to the possibility or working with students who are non-compliant, self-abusive, and/or aggressive.)
This is a full-time position, 181 days during the school year. Work schedule Monday through Friday.
Successful completion of a criminal background check required.
