Student - ASL Tutor

About the Role

The Department of Languages and Cultures is seeking a highly motivated self-starter to work as an ASL tutor in the Language Hub.

Responsibilities

• Tutor students enrolled in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies courses, particularly lower-division courses, in person and virtually.
• Complete a tutoring certification program, model problem-solving skills and study strategies, and assist in curriculum design for the Language Hub.
• Improve personal language skills.
• Participate in the production and dissemination of promotional materials and events.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Language Hub manager.

Requirements

• Current UVU student registered for a minimum of 6.0 credits.
• Native or near-native proficiency in language comprehension, production, and writing.
• Completion of ASL 3050, or equivalent, with a grade of at least an A–.
• Available to work between 12–15 hours per week, during normal business hours (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) and possibly some evening hours to be determined.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engagement with the Deaf community outside the academic setting.
• Majoring or minoring in ASL and Deaf Studies.
• Experience in teaching or tutoring.
• Experience in utilizing tutoring services.
• Experience in collating and analyzing data in Microsoft Excel.

Skills

• Ethical, responsible, motivated self-starter who needs little supervision after training.
• Ability to adhere to a set schedule, generally 15 to 20 hours per week.
• Evidence of advanced customer service and interpersonal skills.
• General computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, etc.).
• Knowledge and ability to explain, in detail, aspects of ASL (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation, colloquial usage, etc.) as covered in ASL 3050, or equivalent.

Schedule

12–15 hours per week, primarily during normal business hours (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) with possible evening hours to be determined.
