Structural Welder

About the role

NJ Transit is searching for a reliable and experienced Welder to join our team. Qualified applicants must pass a physical welding test AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code for unlimited thickness in all positions.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and other written instructions and diagrams to perform tasks.
• Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
• Produce welds that are 100% X-ray quality and demonstrate knowledge and skills in safe rigging practices.
• Walk over and work on top of fixed, overhead fixed, and movable railroad bridges.
• Climb stairwells and ladders (with fall prevention equipment) to perform work.
• Demonstrate complete knowledge in welding, rigging, fabrication, and torching.
• Express knowledge of industrial safety and OSHA guidelines.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Requirements

• Pass physical welding test AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code for unlimited thickness in all positions.
• Certified Welder.
• Extreme attention to detail and full understanding of all safety codes and procedures.
• Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including confined spaces at various heights.
• Physical ability to use various types of hand and power tools.
• Exceptional problem-solving and team leadership skills.
• Valid Driver’s License and High School Diploma or GED.
• Pass pre-screening process including physical and drug test, employment verification, criminal history, and driving background checks.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stoop, bend, crawl, balance, climb, and kneel.
• Wear protective equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, and safety-toe boots.
• Perform heavy lifting and carrying tasks up to 50 pounds.

Work Location

Wood-Ridge/Per Diem, NJ. Structural Welders must be willing and able to travel to any of our NJ Transit locations as required.

Pay

This is a unionized position with tiered, non-negotiable pay rates. The current hourly pay rate is $35.70/hour.
