Position Overview

We are looking for a Structural Steel Fabrication Inspector to help ensure fabricated products meet quality expectations throughout the manufacturing process. This hands-on position involves inspecting structural steel components, welds, coatings, and raw materials while verifying compliance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, and industry standards. The ideal candidate has a background in structural steel fabrication, understands welding codes, and is committed to maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Inspect structural steel components throughout fabrication to verify quality and workmanship
  • Confirm compliance with project specifications and applicable standards, including AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC requirements
  • Examine incoming materials, parts, and consumables to ensure they meet required specifications
  • Record inspection findings and maintain accurate quality reports and documentation
  • Identify, label, and track inspected materials in accordance with established quality procedures
  • Calibrate and maintain welding equipment along with inspection and measuring tools
  • Support welder qualification and certification activities
  • Assist with training related to welding practices, fitting procedures, inspection methods, and quality requirements
  • Maintain drawing control and support documentation used throughout the quality process
  • Work closely with production personnel and leadership to investigate quality concerns and improve manufacturing processes
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts while promoting a safe work environment

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of experience in structural steel fabrication
  • Previous experience in quality control, quality assurance, inspection, or a similar manufacturing role
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC standards
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and project specifications
  • Experience using quality inspection equipment, including:
    • Fillet weld gauges
    • V-WAC gauges
    • Squares
    • Tape measures
    • Standard welding and fabrication inspection tools
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality, accuracy, and workplace safety

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
  • Experience performing or assisting with Nondestructive Testing (NDT), including:
    • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
    • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
    • Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Additional certifications related to structural steel fabrication, welding inspection, bolting, or protective coatings
  • Previous experience in a structural steel fabrication or manufacturing environment

Work Environment

  • Primarily a shop-floor role with limited office responsibilities
  • Manufacturing environment with varying temperatures
  • Frequent standing, walking, and performing inspections throughout the workday
