Structural - Project Engineer

About the role
Project Engineers will be responsible for the successful delivery of small to medium size building projects, or working as part of a large team responsible for an area on major projects, including developing concepts and producing the design.
Responsibilities
- Strategic: Look for ways to improve engineering design and design processes in a particular discipline. Identify new trends in engineering design and apply them to projects.
- Project Management and Technical Improvement (10% of time):
- Project manpower estimates, communications, budget monitoring, and inputs.
- Organizing deliverables and setting project standards for delivery.
- Development of typical details, specifications, and drawing standards, including Revit standards in coordination with the BIM team.
- Stay abreast of industry and technology changes; recommend changes in approach and services.
- Improve analytic processes, documentation, common solutions, and critical solutions.
- Foster a commitment to external and internal client service.
- Projects (90% of time):
- Engineering of small to medium sized projects (less than $80m in construction cost) from concept and schematic design through construction documents to construction and commissioning.
- Engineering of segments of large projects (over $100m), supporting a Senior Project Engineer.
- Provide design inputs and reviews of other engineers’ projects.
- Attend client meetings and promote positive client contact.
- Participate as a team member, contributing ideas and leading on issues where appropriate.
- Perform site visit surveys to determine engineering strategies for renovation and document existing systems.
- Visit project sites during construction for quality, progress, and compliance reviews.
- Conduct project reviews at all stages of design.
- Ensure quality and timely delivery of projects to budget.
- Seek input from senior staff on technical matters to improve the project.
- Business Development:
- Support business development by documenting key aspects of projects and presenting work at industry events.
- Prepare fee estimates and assumptions for potential projects.
- Work with architects on concepts for project competitions.
Performance is measured on:
- Efficiency and profitability of the Engineering Discipline in the office or region and its contributions to firm-wide success.
- Quality of design solutions, including integration, unique solutions, sustainability goals, and peer recognition.
- Quality of work produced, including completeness of design, absence of change orders, and client satisfaction.
- Cohesiveness of the discipline team, including work share, consistency of quality, and team communication.
- Client repeat business.
- Contributions to bringing in new work.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
- Licensed PE (if MEP Engineer) or SE (if Structural Engineer in states with SE license), PE or CE/PE in other states.
- LEED accreditation or Green Associate preferred.
- 5 years of project engineering experience, from design development to opening, including one completed high-profile project.
- Experience delivering projects over $20m and up to $80m in construction value.
- Experience working in integrated teams.
- Experience in design and delivery of LEED Silver or higher projects.
- Experience with architecturally significant buildings is a plus.
- Experience with project types in commercial, corporate, institutional, civic, justice, aviation, and healthcare sectors is a plus.
Skills
- Able to work creatively to reach solutions to complex problems.
- Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD.
Mechanical
- Experience with complex analysis tools and energy modeling for mechanical design.
- Experience calculating, sizing, and specifying mechanical equipment including AHUs, pumps, and fans.
- Experience with heat gain calculations for energy modeling and detailed engineering of mechanical systems.
- Experience with specification editing and construction phases.
- Experience with chilled beam systems, radiant systems, micro-climates, and underfloor air is a plus.
- Design of mechanical air and piping systems for small complex buildings or areas/systems of larger buildings.
Electrical
- Experience with complex analysis tools for electrical design.
- Experience with architecturally significant buildings, controls, commissioning, central plants, multi-emergency generator systems, and mission-critical buildings is a plus.
- Design of medium and low voltage systems.
- Design of electrical systems for small complex buildings.
- Design of Fire Alarm and Life Safety systems for small complex buildings.
Structural
- Experience with complex analysis tools for structural design.
- Design of structural systems for small complex buildings.
Other
- Travel may be required.
- Overtime may be required.

Pay
The reasonably expected annual salary range for this position is $110,000 to $130,000, based on experience, qualifications, education, and location.
