About the role

At SteelCon Inc., we build the future of America’s infrastructure with cutting-edge steel fabrication and structural solutions. This position involves fabricating and assembling structural steel components using prescribed procedures, industry standards, and detailed drawings. Employees must complete SteelCon’s Welder & Fabricator Training Program.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lay out, and fit metal components such as plate stiffeners, stiffened panels, bulkheads, and frames using blueprints or templates and tools while maintaining alignment tolerances.
  • Locate and mark reference lines, including center, buttock, and frame lines.
  • Align parts in relation to each other using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
  • Set, fit, and erect structural assemblies and modules within alignment tolerances.
  • Install structural foundations and outfit items such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
  • Tack weld panels, bulkheads, assemblies, clips, and brackets as needed.
  • Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other metal parts using shop machinery including ironworkers, plate rolls, presses, and press brakes.
  • Follow instructions, written and/or verbal, with little or no supervision.
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned in a safe and efficient manner.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write, and perform higher arithmetic computations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out semi-complicated verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and managers.
  • Ability to work under periodic supervision focused on the progress of work and setting priorities for job completion.
  • Skill in using a tape measure or 1" rule.
  • Maintain American Welding Society certification on 1-inch plate in flat position using gas metal arc welding and flux-cored arc welding processes.
  • Pass the fillet weld break test using the gas metal arc welding process.
  • Pass a SteelCon Inc administered basic welding test covering shop drawing interpretation, weld symbols, welding processes, weld process symbol interpretation and application, and a visual acuity test.
  • Pass a SteelCon Inc administered fitting test covering shop drawing interpretation, fractional number calculations, basic geometry, etc.
  • Interpret, understand, and utilize cutting lists, shop orders, and shop drawings.
  • Operate a cutting torch to meet American Welding Society specifications.
  • Demonstrate pride in workmanship, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.
  • Operate forklifts, jib hoists, and overhead cranes in a safe and proper manner; understand and use industry and SteelCon Inc adopted hand signals for crane operations.
  • Adjust welder settings to ensure proper feed rate and temperature.
  • Ability to multitask.

Physical Demands

  • Stand continuously over the course of an 8- to 12-hour work shift.
  • Walk continuously over the course of an 8- to 12-hour work shift; distances range from a few feet to a 60-foot length of a steel beam.
  • Sit only during break and lunch periods; rarely able to sit while welding.
  • Lift weights up to 20 pounds from floor to chest continuously throughout the shift, including tools used in standard duties.
  • Lift weights up to 35 pounds from floor to waist frequently during the shift.
  • Lift weights up to 85 pounds from floor to waist occasionally during the shift; jib cranes and overhead cranes are available for assistance.
  • Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to the 60-foot length of a steel beam.
  • Push and pull drawers occasionally to frequently to retrieve tools; occasionally push a beam attached to a jib crane or overhead crane to guide into place (force up to 35 pounds).
  • Climb occasionally onto beams stacked on sawhorses to guide into place; occasionally climb a 6- to 10-foot ladder while performing duties.
  • Stoop or crouch occasionally to frequently for a few seconds to 15 minutes depending on the job.
  • Kneel occasionally to frequently for a few minutes to 15 minutes while performing duties.
  • Crawl rarely under a beam to reach the opposite side; distance crawled is less than 3 feet.
  • Reach forward continuously to perform duties or retrieve tools; occasionally reach to full forward extension.
  • Reach overhead occasionally to guide a beam attached to cranes and to attach crane chains to beams or to weld underneath the beam.
  • Balance occasionally to climb ladders and walk on steel beams; no unprotected heights.
  • Possess gross finger dexterity to operate various tools and equipment; trigger squeeze motion required for grinders; fine finger dexterity not required.

Work Environment

  • Expected to work 40 hours per week; overtime and weekends may be required based on company needs.
  • Hear sufficiently to remain aware of safety issues.
  • Visual ability to read and interpret cut lists and shop drawings; safety glasses required in the shop area.
  • Occasional exposure to heat, cold, wet, and humid conditions in the shop area.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, odors, and dust in the shop area.
  • Occasional exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants in the shop area.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment, including steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.

Tools and Equipment

  • Machines utilized: welder, overhead crane, jib crane, pallets, sawhorses, forklifts.
  • Required tools supplied by the company.
