Structural Engineer - Substation (Chicago)

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Structural Engineer to lead a multi-discipline team addressing the challenges of North America’s largest utilities. Opportunities include:

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a directly related field from an ABET-accredited program and three (3) years of structural engineering experience in the specified areas. Alternatively, a Master’s degree in the same fields with two (2) years of experience, plus three (3) years of described experience, is acceptable.

• Performing rigid bus analysis and designing electrical substation steel structures, equipment foundations, and secondary oil containment.
• Developing performance and material specifications.
• Strong knowledge of standard structural engineering techniques and procedures.
• Strong knowledge of structural design codes (e.g., IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE 7). Experience with ASCE 113 strongly preferred.
• Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Strong knowledge of structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, ETABS, SAFE).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Working knowledge of CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, Tekla).
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills and ability to work methodically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Strong attention to detail, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Performing field inspections and compliance documentation.
• Experience leading or being part of a team of single-discipline professionals.

Pay

Expected compensation range: $105,000.00 - $155,000.00 yearly. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
