Structural Engineer - Power (Multiple Locations)
Burns & McDonnell’s Power Division designs and constructs power-generation facilities—fossil, hydrogen, solar, nuclear, and energy-storage—as well as other heavy-industrial plants such as decarbonization, mining, and gas-compression sites. About the role
We are hiring an experienced Structural Engineer to join our downtown Chicago, IL office. In this role, you will collaborate with project teams to deliver world-class designs for new builds, alterations, and redevelopments across a variety of power-generation and industrial projects. You will work throughout the entire design and construction lifecycle, adapting structural plans to meet budget constraints, design factors, industry standards, and client needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural design from conceptual phase through design completion.
- Modify and review production drawings for multiple projects.
- Design structural components according to project requirements set by project managers.
- Apply strong knowledge of structural engineering concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures.
- Research and compile project-related data as directed by project managers.
- Update drawings in CAD software to verify corrections made by senior engineers.
- Compile information for client presentations, shop-drawing review, and contract administration.
- Conduct field inspections, measurements, and calculations for public and private clients.
- Perform other assigned duties and comply with all company policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program plus successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- A Master’s degree in Structural Engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
- Minimum of three years of structural engineering experience.
- Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative, problem-solving environment; demonstrated critical-thinking skills.
- Proficiency in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA 3D), AutoCAD, and BIM (e.g., Tekla).
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team-building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license encouraged.
Pay
Yearly salary range: $100,000 – $160,000. The final compensation will reflect individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and work location.
