Structural Engineer Inspector Bridge & Waterfront – Senior Level

Our Norfolk, VA office is actively searching for a certified Team Lead with Professional Engineer licensure to oversee and inspect transportation (bridges, highways, and roadways) and waterfront construction sites.

Responsibilities
- Partner with other professionals and departments to gather information for projects
- Work collaboratively with all members of the inspection group
- Lead, coordinate, and participate in field inspections, condition assessments, and construction observation of transportation (bridges, highways, and roadways) and waterfront construction sites
- Utilize data entry/manipulation and technical writing skills for the preparation and review of inspection reports, proposals, etc.
- Lead in preparing technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates for design, rehabilitation, and inspection projects
- Provide quality assurance reviews of inspection reports
- Ensure project adherence to Moffatt & Nichol’s Quality Management System
- Perform other duties as required
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Professional Engineer licensure is required; ability to obtain licensure in the State of Virginia via reciprocity within 6 months of hire
- 10 to 15 years of structural inspection experience
- FHWA-NHI-130055 certification (Team Leader qualification)
- FHWA NBIS (23 CFR 650.309) certification
- NSTM/Fracture Critical certification
- FHWA-NHI-130078 certification
- Waterfront inspection experience preferred
- SNBI experience desired
- Field work is 5 days per week; hours may vary due to weather or daylight, with some weekends required
- Availability and willingness to travel overnight/out of town approximately 10-15%
- Valid driver’s license in good standing
- Boater Safety Card preferred
- Willingness to work from Moffatt & Nichol’s Norfolk, VA office on non-field days
- Must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
- Must successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post-offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
- Employment is contingent upon the legal ability to work in the U.S. and presenting required documentation at hire
Working Conditions
- Field work will be performed outdoors in all seasons, typically requiring overtime during field weeks
- Majority of work is field-based, necessitating navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment
- Use of inspection equipment such as ladders, boats, and under-bridge access equipment with safety harnesses for fall protection
- Ability to lift and use equipment with assistance
- Enduring inclement weather will be required
Pay
Base salary range: $120,000 to $170,000 based on years of experience, level of education, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications. Applicable for candidates hired and working in the Virginia market.
