About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure — the people who keep the cloud running. The team supports all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensures customers have continual access to innovation. This Structural Engineer role sits within the Mechanical Products and Services team, supporting the analysis, design, coordination, and documentation of structural cooling products used across AWS infrastructure. The position involves structural steel and connection design, industrial structures, and structural analysis for cooling systems support structures, equipment platforms, elevated structures, bracing systems, and structural connections. Work spans collaboration with product design engineering, global integration engineers, and quality engineers to deliver safe, code-compliant, constructible, and scalable solutions implemented across multiple facilities worldwide. Domestic and international travel up to 25% of the year is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop structural calculations and design documentation for cooling systems and associated infrastructure, including equipment supports, structural steel framing, platforms, bracing systems, and structural connections
  • Support development of structural permit documents, installation drawings, fabrication information, and coordinated BIM models
  • Design structural connections from building structure and platforms to equipment, ensuring load path integrity and code compliance
  • Create specialized connection details for unique conditions including seismic zones and retrofit applications
  • Design and evaluate lateral and sway bracing systems for equipment and structural support systems
  • Design structural platforms, access structures, equipment support frames, and other secondary structural systems to support material handling operations
  • Perform comprehensive structural analysis and design calculations for cooling products, including air handler units, adiabatic coolers, platforms, equipment supports, and other specialty structures
  • Develop clear, organized calculation packages documenting design assumptions, loading criteria, analysis methodology, and results
  • Trace load paths from equipment through support structure to building foundation
  • Verify equipment vendor load data and coordinate with manufacturers on structural requirements
  • Perform structural analysis using software and finite element analysis tools
  • Support development and implementation of standardized structural engineering procedures, workflows, and design systems for material handling systems
  • Develop and maintain calculation templates, engineering tools, typical details, and design guidelines
  • Support development and implementation of computational design and engineering automation workflows
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, constructability, fabrication, installation, coordination, and overall project delivery
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, structural standards, project requirements, and Amazon design criteria
  • Partner with platform fabricators and manufacturers to integrate structural requirements with equipment specifications
  • Coordinate with MEP engineers to resolve conflicts and ensure proper clearances for utilities
  • Attend design coordination meetings and provide technical guidance on structural systems to project teams
  • Review and approve vendor shop drawings, calculations, and connection submittals
