Structural Engineer, Assistant Team Leader
AIE Engineers, Inc. (AIE) is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our Bridge Inspection and Design teams in Virginia. Responsibilities
- Perform bridge, tunnel, and ancillary/traffic safety inspections and load ratings.
- Prepare scheduling, write inspection reports, ensure QA/QC, and assist with project coordination.
- Execute engineering tasks related to bridge design and other transportation-related structural design and analysis projects.
- Design steel, concrete, and/or timber bridge elements, walls, and associated structures.
- Perform structural analyses, develop calculations, and prepare plans in accordance with federal, state, and local agency requirements.
- Prepare quantities, cost estimates, and special provisions.
- Conduct site visits and structure inspections as needed.
- Manage and maintain project and QA/QC documentation.
- Assist project managers with schedule and budget updates and proposal preparation.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree.
- 1+ years of experience in bridge inspection or design, methods, and procedures.
- Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) is preferred.
- Experience with VDOT projects is preferred.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation or ability to obtain within 12 months is preferred.
- Bridge Design/Rehabilitation and Bridge Load Rating experience is preferred.
- NHI Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures, FCM, tunnel inspection NHI courses, railroad, and/or safety training are a plus.
- Completion of an NHI two (2) week Bridge Inspector’s Training Certificate and/or Refresher course within the past 5 years is preferred.
- Safety inspection experience is preferred.

- Self-starter with the ability to work with project teams and manage multiple, concurrent tasks/assignments.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage inspection duties in the field.
- Data-driven and detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Considerable knowledge of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction inspection processes and procedures.
- Ability to meet deadlines and complete work in a timely manner.
- Willingness and ability to travel to work sites.
