About the role
Performs routine, semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, alleys, walkways, parking lots and related public works areas.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine construction, maintenance and repair work on streets, alleys, driveways, walkways and other areas using various hand and power tools and equipment, including jackhammers, concrete saws, dump trucks, forklifts, skip loaders, backhoes, and graders.
- Breaks surfaces and digs, shovels and removes asphalt, concrete, dirt, gravel and roots.
- Trims and removes shrubs, roots and other vegetation from alleys and along roadways to prepare and grade work areas.
- Cleans and prepares work areas for asphalt application.
- Oils areas using a compressor and dumps hot asphalt.
- Spreads and rakes asphalt.
- Seals and caps surface areas.
- Cleans work sites following completion of job.
- Loads and unloads sand, gravel, soil, supplies, tools and equipment.
- Identifies and repairs potholes.
- Makes minor repairs to sprinkler heads and lines, as necessary.
- Assists in building and removing concrete forms and mixing and pouring cement and concrete to construct sidewalks, driveways, walls, curbs, and gutters.
- Places posts and pours foundations.
- Places safety barricades, delineators and cones to identify and secure job sites.
- Assists in directing traffic around work sites.
- Utilizes a work order database system to retrieve work order and enter and/or update work orders completed.
- Maintains tools and equipment in proper working order.
- Checks oils, gas and tires and makes pre-trip inspections.
- Responds to emergency situations, as needed.
- Follows applicable safety rules and regulations.
Requirements
- Knowledge of: General construction principles and practices. Basic principles and techniques of asphalt laying and concrete handling. Safe use of hand and power tools. Safe work practices and procedures. Basic vehicle and equipment maintenance. Basic mathematics. Effective customer service techniques.
- Ability To Perform construction and repair work on streets, alleys, walks and related structures. Learn methods and techniques of asphalt paving and overlay. Learn methods and techniques of concrete mixing and handling. Safely and properly use hand and power tools and heavy equipment. Identify trees and learn proper pruning and tree root removal techniques. Perform simple repairs to underground sprinkler systems. Maintain assigned equipment and perform minor maintenance tasks. Perform basic mathematical calculations. Perform heavy physical labor for sustained periods. Lift, carry, and move heavy objects up to and including 50 lbs. Read and understand basic maps, blueprints, diagrams and gauges. Follow oral and written instructions. Learn and use specialized computer software applications. Provide effective customer service.
- Physical demands include traveling from site to site, working with hot materials, standing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and lifting and moving heavy objects up to and including 50 lbs. and the occasional use of street maintenance hand equipment weighing up to 100 lbs.
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
- One year of recent, paid work experience performing public works maintenance and construction work. Recent experience performing street or roadway repair work is desirable.

Pay
Salary range: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour.
Schedule
Full-time, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
