About the Role
Operates heavy equipment to construct and maintain streets and drainage systems. For qualified applicants with two years' experience operating heavy equipment, the starting rate of pay is $16.61 per hour. There is a possibility of higher starting pay based on relevant job qualifications and additional experience.
Responsibilities
- Operates heavy equipment engaged in the construction and maintenance of streets, including backhoe, bulldozer, loader, mixer, and boom mower.
- Maintains equipment in proper working condition, including checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments.
- Loads, transports, and unloads construction materials and small equipment.
- Assists with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling hot mix, dirt, or other materials during road repair.
- Smoothes road surfaces using heavy equipment.
- Clears ditches, creeks, and storm drains.
This is a non-supervisory position.
Requirements
- High school graduation or its equivalent plus at least two years of experience operating heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Class B Texas commercial driver's license (CDL). Employees who do not have a Class B CDL upon hire must successfully complete the City of Brenham's CDL Training Program to obtain the required license within 180 days of hire.
- Knowledge of methods, practices, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of roadways; and safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to operation of heavy and light motorized equipment.
- Ability to operate heavy and light equipment used in street construction and maintenance; service and make minor repairs on equipment; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
- Must maintain a Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities.

Work Environment
- Work outdoors with exposure to outdoor elements, loud noises, vibrations, and respiratory hazards such as dust, gases, and chemicals.
- Exercise caution and adhere to safety standards to avoid the risk of personal injury.
- Work under time pressures to meet deadlines, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and work closely with others as part of a team.
- Work in a noisy and distracting environment.
