Non-exempt position reporting to the Assistant Superintendent of Street.

About the role

The Laborer II in the Street Department performs a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction tasks related to streets, sidewalks, curbs, and other infrastructure within the city. This position is essential for ensuring the safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the city's public spaces.

Pay

$14.33 per hour

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience in street maintenance, construction, or related field preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License Class C at time of placement.

Skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of construction materials, techniques, and equipment used in street maintenance and repair activities.
  • Effective communication skills to interact professionally with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the public.
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools used in street maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks in various weather conditions and environments.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of streets, sidewalks, curbs, and other public infrastructure to identify defects, damage, or hazards requiring maintenance or repair.
  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks, such as patching potholes, repairing cracks, and replacing damaged sections of pavement, using appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of street signage, guardrails, traffic barriers, and pavement markings to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Operate equipment and tools, such as jackhammers, saws, and concrete mixers, safely and efficiently to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Collaborate with other street department staff, utility workers, contractors, and external agencies to coordinate work activities and address service requests or emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and reporting related to maintenance activities, including work orders, inspection reports, and material usage.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, procedures, and regulations to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and others, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with traffic control measures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
