About the role

The Communications Intern will support the Senior Director of Strategic Communications in the Office of the President by assisting with the development, coordination, and execution of strategic communications initiatives. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting executive communications, internal messaging, employee engagement initiatives, and organizational storytelling within one of the nation's largest public transportation agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Draft internal communications, announcements, newsletters, and other written materials for executive and employee audiences.
  • Assist in preparing executive presentations, briefing materials, speeches, talking points, and correspondence.
  • Conduct research on transportation, communications best practices, and industry trends to support strategic initiatives.
  • Support the planning and coordination of employee engagement campaigns and internal communications initiatives.
  • Maintain communications calendars, project trackers, and supporting documentation to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
  • Assist in preparing materials for MTA Committee and Board meetings, including presentation development and document coordination.
  • Collaborate with departments across New York City Transit to gather information, verify content, and develop communications that support agency priorities.
  • Proofread, edit, and format communication materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to organizational standards.

Projects

  • Executive Communications Support: Assist in developing executive presentations, briefing materials, speeches, talking points, and internal communications for the Office of the President and senior leadership.
  • Employee Engagement & Internal Communications: Support the planning and execution of employee engagement campaigns by creating content for newsletters, announcements, and internal communication platforms that promote agency initiatives and organizational priorities.
  • Strategic Communications & Board Materials: Assist in preparing communications materials for MTA Committee and Board meetings, maintain communications project trackers and calendars, and conduct research to support strategic communications initiatives and executive messaging.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Keen eye for detail and ability to work independently while being an active team player.

Qualifications

  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA and/or matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA.
  • Preferred majors: Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, Political Science, Public Administration, or related field.
  • All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of application.
  • Students’ transcript must be submitted.

Pay

Hourly rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate).

Schedule

All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.
