Strategic Advisor for Asymmetric Operations

About the role

We are seeking an expert to help discover and drive innovative solutions across the Asymmetric Operations Sector (AOS) mission set. This role emphasizes cyber operations and its contribution to AOS and Laboratory mission sets. You will advise the sector on strategic areas in cyber operations, spanning weapon systems, command/control/communications, critical infrastructure, and other key areas for national security.

You will partner with line leaders, program managers, and the sponsor community to develop a deep understanding of sponsor challenges. You will promote intellectual curiosity, creativity, innovation, and technical excellence to deliver high-impact capabilities. Additionally, you will grow and develop staff through coaching and mentoring, engage with sponsors and teams to generate solutions, and cultivate partnerships across the national security community.

Responsibilities

  • Advise the sector on strategic areas in cyber operations, including weapon systems, command/control/communications, and critical infrastructure.
  • Partner with line leaders, program managers, and sponsors to understand and address challenges across the AOS mission set.
  • Promote intellectual curiosity, creativity, innovation, and technical excellence to meet current and future sponsor needs.
  • Refine staff ideas using operational experience to create disruptive impact on missions.
  • Grow and develop staff through coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Engage with sponsors, project managers, and teams to solicit ideas and generate collaborative solutions.
  • Cultivate a deep understanding of sponsors’ challenges and maintain strong relationships with key organizations in the national security community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, math, computer science, physics, or a related discipline, or demonstrated experience and leadership in advanced cyber operations for national security.
  • At least 10 years of experience leading high-performing organizations in government/military, industry, or UARC/FFRDCs.
  • Proven track record of successfully mentoring and developing staff and cultivating collaborative relationships within and across organizational boundaries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to attend meetings with government partners.
  • Active TS/SCI level security clearance and ability to obtain a TS/SCI+Poly by start date; U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating strategies for national-level military or other USG cyber organizations.
  • Proven track record in developing impactful collaborations among organizations toward mission goals.
  • Significant experience briefing high-level sponsors at the Flag and SES levels.

Pay

Minimum rate: $105,000 annually. Maximum rate: $290,000 annually. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training, skill level, and internal parity. APL may offer bonuses, sign-on bonuses, relocation benefits, locality allowances, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
