About the role

Lead a team of incarcerated individuals, providing work direction and training in receiving, inspecting, storing, and distributing stock, supplies, and/or equipment in assigned work areas such as warehouse, quartermaster, laundry, or commissary.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce storeroom or warehouse procedures
  • Inventory and order supplies
  • Complete and maintain shipping, receiving, and inventory records
  • Receive clothing and shoes for incarcerated individuals
  • Receive clothing and equipment for staff
  • Issue and/or exchange clothing items and shoes for incarcerated individuals
  • Issue and/or exchange clothing items and equipment for staff
  • Store and rotate stock
  • Update and maintain logs and records; maintain perpetual inventory
  • Label and/or price stock items
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, policies, and procedures
  • Operate all related equipment assigned to area
  • Open incoming mail and physically inspect contents
  • Operate x-ray equipment to scan incoming parcels and packages for detection of potentially threatening and/or suspicious materials (contraband)
  • Follow security procedures for confiscation of contraband and notification of appropriate institutional staff for investigation
  • Operate postage machines (e.g., postage scale, meter machine) to process incoming/outgoing mail; sort mail for most efficient handling
  • Determine class of mail; set postage meters; date and time stamps; open, bundle, address
  • Complete documentation associated with special mail handling such as certified return receipts or receipts for insurance
  • Ensure prompt handling of time-sensitive documents that could have impact on legal notifications and deliver to appropriate office and/or pick up mail, parcels, and/or messages
  • Prepare and submit all applicable reports when required and ensure audit control of records
  • Distribute cleaning supplies, paper products, dry goods, and other food items
  • Receive clothing and shoes from incarcerated individuals being released
  • Receive clothing and equipment from staff separating from the institution
  • Load and unload trucks and/or distribute contents to various offices
  • Maintain daily record in assigned area
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area
  • Serve on institution committees

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages
  • Six months of training or six months of experience in inventory control
  • Three months of training or three months of experience in OSHA and/or other safety standards and practices applicable to storeroom or warehouse operations
  • Employees working in a drug central warehouse or storeroom must pass a security screen
