POSITION TITLE: Store Supervisor
STATUS: Hourly, full-time
REPORTS TO: Store Manager and/or Assistant Store Manager
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
- High School degree or equivalent
- Three years supervisory experience
- Three years of demonstrated experience in a retail environment
- Demonstrated knowledge of cash controls and cashier procedures
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Detail oriented and attention to detail
- Team player with a spirit of cooperation and work with all others towards goals set by management
- Able to delegate job tasks and give instructions in an oral and/or written manner
- Strong use of the English language in verbal and written communication

- A valid, in-state license and ability to pass The Salvation Army's in-house driving test and MVR check
- If employee owns his/her own vehicle, must possess current auto insurance for instances in which a personal vehicle is used on TSA time and/or business.
SOFTWARE-RELATED SKILLS:
- Cash Register Skills Required
- Microsoft Word and Excel preferred
- Ability to use new software programs with basic training.
SCOPE OF POSITION:
In coordination with the management team, the supervision of store staff in daily responsibilities of meeting daily goals, merchandise organization, production, customer service, and sales while maintaining a clean organized retail setting. When the Store Manager is not on site, the Store Supervisor will be responsible for all daily activities in the store.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Personnel
- Train and supervise all employees, volunteers and auxiliary staff working in the thrift store
- Provide specific written input with reference to annual evaluations of employees and evaluation of trainees as needed from referring agencies
- Provide regularly scheduled staff meeting with all store personnel to communicate to them the goals of the organization and recommendations for improving operations
- Ensure all staff and volunteers will be thoroughly orientated in safety and accident policy and procedures as outlined in The Salvation Army Employee Handbook
- General Responsibilities
- Provide quarterly documentation to support the pricing of merchandise using other thrift stores in the community as a comparison
- Handle the store sales income on a daily basis to include uniform procedures for: all types of cash, charge, check and voucher transactions; daily sales report documentation, bank deposits and cash/check donations
- Ensure the frequent changing and upgrading of all store displays ensuring that all floor stock is attractively organized and frequently rearranged so as to cultivate customer interest
- Ensure the ragging out of any donated items that have been on the floor for the designated minimum period
- Ensure the reupholstering and/or reconditioning of items should not be lowered without the management team's approval
- Ensure the marking down of any normally baled items such as clothing and linens will be marked down to a pre-agreed upon percentage and frequency with the Store Manager
- Ensure the non-marking down of any new mattress sets and furniture without written approval
- Maintenance/Custodial
- Ensure proper safety, cleanliness, care and maintenance of the retail sales floor, production area, building in general, vehicles, and all restrooms
- Ensure that monthly safety inspections are conducted in accordance with Salvation Army Policy immediately notifying the BCM of any deficiencies and corrective action taken
- Order any supplies needed to perform daily operations
- Customer/Community Relations
- Ensure that store clerks positively acknowledge and treat all customers in a courteous manner
- Ensure that all staff/workers are treated with the same respect and fairness while working in the store
- Handle customer complaints in a professional manner by all staff
- Personalize complaints with regard to the sales floor and immediately notify the Manager of the facts surrounding the complaint and the disposition thereof
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
- Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead for duties such as stocking store shelves
- Ability to operate cash register
- Ability to operate telephone
- Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
- Ability to access and produce information from a computer
- Ability to understand and produce written information
