Primary Responsibilities
- Cargo Handling: Load and unload cargo from ships using cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery.
- Lashing and Securing: Secure cargo using chains, straps, and other equipment to prevent shifting during transit.
- Stowage Planning: Organize cargo placement to optimize space and maintain vessel stability.
- Inspection: Check cargo for damage and report discrepancies.
- Communication: Coordinate with crane operators and other team members using hand signals or radios.
- Safety Compliance: Follow strict safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
General Labor Requirements
- Manual Handling: Lift, carry, push, and pull heavy loads (often exceeding 50 lbs) throughout the shift.
- Endurance: Stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
- Environmental Tolerance: Work outdoors in all weather conditions including heat, rain, wind, and cold weather environment.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery as needed.
- Clean-Up Duties: Maintain cleanliness of work areas, including sweeping, debris removal, and equipment maintenance.
- Flexibility: Ability to work day and/or evening shifts, overtime during the week and/or on weekends.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to pass a physical, drug screen and background check.
- Must be able to obtain a TWIC Badge.
Work Environment
- Location: Ports, docks, ship decks, ship holds, and cargo yards.
- Conditions: Outdoor work in varying weather; physically demanding, working with and around heavy machinery, and moving cargo.
- Schedule: Often shift-based, including nights, weekends, and holidays depending on shipping schedules.
Skills And Qualifications
- Physical Fitness: Ability to lift heavy loads and work in strenuous conditions.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating cargo handling equipment.
- Attention to Detail: Critical for cargo safety and proper documentation.
- Teamwork: Strong coordination with other dockworkers and supervisors.
Additional Duties
- May assist in preparing cargo (e.g., vehicles, equipment, bulk goods, break bulk, rigging, and various cargos) for delivery and/or storage.
- Warehousing and Storage: Perform related tasks as required.
