Sterile Processing Technician (Non Certified) - Evenings (PRN/ Intermittent)

About the role

Works under the general supervision of the Sterile Processing Manager and direct supervision of the Sterile Processing Shift Supervisor. Cleans, assembles, and sterilizes equipment, supplies, and instruments. Decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes surgical instruments utilizing steam autoclaves and Plasma low-temperature sterilization equipment. Performs high-level disinfection of equipment and instrumentation using Automatic Endoscope Reprocessing units and manual soaking protocols. Extensive training on each protocol is provided, with timelines depending on experience and skill level.

• Performs all duties within AAMI/AORN standards and follows manufacturer instructions for equipment and instrumentation reprocessing.
• Decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes all equipment and instruments properly, following all procedures and guidelines during cleaning, preparation, and sterilization.
• Ensures all steps are followed during decontamination, cleaning, and inspection.
• Utilizes all electronic tracking systems as intended; reports discrepancies in safety (e.g., sharps, medication, damaged equipment).
• Performs collection and distribution of instrument sets and equipment for serviced departments.
• Completes decontamination maintenance duties, including sink cleaning, stainless steel countertop cleaning, efficacy testing of washers, cavitation machines, and cart washers; sweeps and mops floors.
• Performs assembly maintenance duties, including cleaning and stocking workstations, pre- and post-work processes, and organizing instrument staging racks.
• Performs sterilization maintenance duties, including organizing sterilization workstations, biological incubators, and sterilization racks.
• Provides optimum customer service during computer emails, phone calls, or in-person interactions; coordinates patient care efforts with multidisciplinary teams.
• Assists Ambulatory, Ancillary, and OR staff with instrumentation set maintenance and updates.
• Utilizes hospital training modules, departmental in-service training, and off-site sessions to follow regulatory and certification practices.
• Reports hospital policy non-compliance, defective materials, or equipment to the shift Supervisor or SPD Manager.
• Assists OR staff with case cart and instrumentation assembly processes.
• Begins each shift by reviewing email communications and answering requests in a timely manner.
• Practices sound safety and infection control measures; reports identified issues to the Supervisor or SPD Manager.
• Maintains quality control observations for all equipment and systems used in daily operations.
• Evaluates daily practice in relation to professional SPD standards, statutes, regulations, and hospital policies.
• Acts as a patient advocate; ensures patient privacy before, during, and after all work activities.
• Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with employees, physicians, patients, and visitors; treats individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy, and respect.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 0–1 year of sterile processing experience.

Skills

• Knowledge of hospital safety hazard protocols, including universal precautions and body mechanics ergonomics.
• Ability to maintain quality control standards in decontamination, assembly, and sterilization work areas.
• Ability to maintain departmental documentation, including electronic records, verification, validation, and completion.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Clear verbal and written communication; professional communication electronically and in person.
• Respect for coworkers by acknowledging their values and beliefs.
• Versatility to perform any assigned job duties supporting daily operations.
• Punctuality and readiness to work at the start of each shift.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sterile Processing Microsystems, and One Source document management.

Pay

$21.00 - $27.19 per hour.

Schedule

Evening shift; PRN/Intermittent (as needed).
