Responsibilities

  • Maintain sterile supplies in the main Sterile Processing Department (SPD) storage area at specific intervals, rotate supplies, and re-sterilize compromised items.
  • Prepare and sterilize procedural trays for inpatient units, outpatient departments, outlying clinics, and surgical suites.
  • Disassemble and reassemble instruments or equipment requiring cleaning and sterilization, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Conduct biological tests in SPD, taking cultures of equipment to ensure proper sterilization per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Attend and participate in in-service education programs, Quality Assurance/Process Improvement initiatives, orientation of new SPD personnel, and unit staff meetings.
  • Communicate with the Operating Room team and nurse leaders about sterile supply, instrument, and equipment storage.
  • Operate and maintain specialized SPD equipment, including Washer/Decontaminator, Autoclaves, Steris System One processor, Sonic Washer, and heat sealer.
  • Ensure compliance with Privacy and HIPAA standards.
  • Follow recall procedures for sterilization issues that may compromise patient care.
  • Assist the team by providing properly processed and sterilized materials, supplies, and instruments to maintain OR patient flow with minimal delays.
  • Organize inventory, order missing equipment, and maintain recipe tray forms and other SPD documents.
  • Order and receive surgical service supplies and supplementary patient care supplies.
  • Assist, promote, and support compliance with established Center for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) Standards.
  • Complete all yearly required CMS training by their due date.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
  • Must obtain valid certification as a Central Service Technician/Sterile Processing Technician within one (1) year of hire from either:
    • The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), or
    • The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Qualifications

  • Entry-level position requiring at least three (3) months of experience in sterile processing or graduation from an accredited Sterile Processing program.

Pay

$21.17 - $25.62/hour.

Navajo/Indian Preference: FDIHB, located within the Navajo Nation, implements a Navajo/Indian Preference in Employment Policy. Primary preference is given to enrolled members of the Navajo Nation, with secondary preference for members of other federally recognized Indian tribes. Other candidates will be considered only after all candidates entitled to preference have been fully considered.
