About the role
Processes all reusable medical/surgical items for issue according to departmental and infection control policy and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Sterilizes instruments and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and infection control guidelines.
- Completes thorough cleaning of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Processes patient care equipment for re-issue.
- Inspects patient care equipment for cleanliness and proper functioning.
- Inspects surgical instruments and equipment for proper functioning.
- Performs biological indicator tests on the Steam sterilizers and the Sterrad Unit and Steris One.
- Assembles instrument sets according to department protocols.
- Packages instrument sets for sterilizing.
- Distributes sterile equipment to appropriate areas.
- Communicates and notifies all personnel for the recall of sterilized items.
- Restocks surgery unit with medical/surgical supplies.
- Maintains established supply levels in the Central Processing area.
- Revises department policies to meet the department standards.
- Observes environmental standards for the Central Processing area.
Requirements
- High School Graduate
- No experience required
Skills
- Good interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to receive and present information with proper conduct and tact
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to stand, walk, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders on a daily basis.
- Lift up to 15 lbs. from floor to overhead
- Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance
- Push/pull with 20 lbs. of force
- Repetitive use of feet (i.e., heat sealer, sonic cleaner)
- Functional speech, vision, touch, and hearing required
- May be exposed to chemical hazards; therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary
