About the role

Demonstrates an understanding of policies, procedures and regulatory requirements and builds continued competency in order to work independently in the decontamination, sterilization, and sterile storage activities of the department.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an adequate level of instruments necessary for the efficient functioning of customer departments.
• Understand the equipment and chemicals used in reprocessing reusable instruments and equipment and implement appropriate processes in a safe and timely manner, including handling and decontamination of soiled instruments, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization.
• Provide preceptor support to other employees.
• Build and maintain a comprehensive body of knowledge regarding standards and procedures for preparation, sterilization, storage, and delivery of surgical instrumentation per AAMI, AORN, and CDC guidelines.
• Answer telephone promptly and assist callers with obtaining needed items.
• Assemble supplies and place into case carts for scheduled and non-scheduled procedures.
• Make rounds throughout the hospital to deliver sterile and non-sterile instrumentation, supplies, and equipment, and to pick up contaminated or credit instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
• Deliver scheduled case carts to the Surgery Department.
• Inventory and deliver back-up case carts to the Surgery Department and required areas.
• Maintain responsibility for returned instrumentation and supplies (if applicable) that is unused, ensuring the integrity of packaging has not been compromised.
• Perform cleaning and decontamination duties, addressing all instrumentation thoroughly and safely, including unique cleaning demands.
• Inspect, assemble, and package all decontaminated reusable instruments and sets, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
• Operate all processing equipment used within the department.
• Perform sterilization and all associated monitoring activities.
• Observe all safety and security procedures; report potential unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly.
• Assist in keeping the department organized, neat, clean, and fully stocked while providing quality customer service.
• Act as a preceptor for new employees.
• Perform duties in a safe manner to prevent injury to self, patients, visitors, or other hospital personnel.
• Contribute to maintaining supplies and sterile items for use throughout the hospital; keep department clean, neat, and well organized.
• Prioritize work and focus on consistent throughput.
• Perform dispatch duties.
• Contribute to all official departmental business in a professional manner.
