About the role

The Sterile Processing Advanced Technician is a medical professional who reports to the Sterile Processing Supervisor. This technician specializes in the decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments for the Operating Room, hospital clinics, and the offsite Newport location. The Advanced Technician also cleans and processes endoscopes according to hospital policies and manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs).

Acts as a resource for fellow team members and other departments, takes charge duty in the Supervisor’s absence, and assists in training new employees.

Responsibilities

  • Perform decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and endoscopes following manufacturer IFUs and hospital policies.
  • Act as Charge Technician when the Supervisor is absent, including ordering supplies, restocking trauma sets, and communicating updates to the Supervisor.
  • Coordinate with representatives for incoming/outgoing trays and communicate with the OR regarding missing instruments.
  • Edit set write-ups as needed and ensure compliance with AAMI guidelines and hospital policies for sterile processing.
  • Perform equipment testing (Bowie/Dick and biological indicators) and report abnormal results to the Supervisor.
  • Deliver sterile instruments and kits to other departments within 48 hours.
  • Maintain a clean work environment, including damp dusting, end-of-day cleaning, and trash/linen removal.
  • Attend staff meetings, in-services, and stay current on departmental communications and competencies.
  • Participate in the orientation and training of new staff, travelers, and complete other assigned duties.
  • Answer phones, take messages, and assist OR staff in locating kits or instruments.
  • Work with facilities to address departmental issues and ensure proper inspection and assembly of surgical instrument kits.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Central Sterile certification required within two years of hire (obtained through CBSPD).

One of the following certifications is required within 365 days of hire:

  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT)
  • Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS)
  • Certified Sterile Processing Manager (CSPM)
  • Certified Ambulatory Surgery Sterile Processing Technician (CASSPT)
  • Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER)
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER)
  • Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS)
  • Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL)
