A Day In The Life

  • Routinely check, clean, and repair belts, equipment, pumps and all alarm systems for proper functioning and readiness for use.
  • Determine malfunctions in a variety of equipment and make appropriate repairs.
  • Perform pipefitting and plumbing tasks required for Steam Plant equipment including steam and water lines.
  • Perform mechanical repairs on trucks, front-end loaders, elevators, conveyors, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Assist Steam Plant Supervisor in annual overhaul and cleaning of boilers, condensate return system, packing of valves and servicing diesel and electric motors and engines.
  • Operate or assist in the operation of the plant during emergency or peak periods.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need For Success

  • Must obtain within twelve (12) months, the Facility Operator 3rd Class certification.
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings if the position is placed in IDOC.
  • Ability to use specialized skills in providing plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs.
  • Working knowledge of and skill in use of a wide variety of basic and specialized hand tools required for repair of steam plant equipment.
  • Ability to determine malfunctions of Steam Plant equipment and to make repairs.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand schematics to determine function of equipment.
  • A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) plus 1 year of work experience in steam plant maintenance or repair of various types of steam plant equipment or completion of an accredited vocational training program in a related area OR two (2) years of work experience in plumbing or maintenance trades.
