About the role

Operate and maintain central plant and critical utility systems in a 24/7 acute-care hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air compressors, and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Monitor plant and utility systems through building automation and plant control systems; respond to alarms and abnormal conditions.
  • Perform routine plant rounds, inspections, and operational checks to ensure system reliability and safety.
  • Support medical gas system operation and monitoring in accordance with NFPA 99 requirements.
  • Assist with emergency power system readiness and coordination during outages or system events.
  • Respond promptly to utility failures, equipment malfunctions, and emergency situations to maintain patient safety and hospital operations.
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, readings, and shift reports.
  • Support regulatory inspections and accreditation surveys by maintaining compliance-ready plant operations.
  • Follow all safety protocols including lockout/tagout, confined space, and PPE requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of vocational program preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience operating central plant or industrial utility systems; healthcare or critical facility experience strongly preferred.
  • State or municipal Stationary Engineer license or certification preferred or required based on jurisdiction.
  • Boiler operator certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with building automation systems, plant control systems, CMMS platforms, and standard computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an acute-care hospital or healthcare facility environment.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 99, NFPA 110, Joint Commission Physical Environment standards, and CMS Conditions of Participation.
  • Experience working rotating shifts in a 24/7 operational setting.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must comply with all safety, infection control, and PPE requirements.
  • Position requires rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
