Stationary Engineer

About the role

As a Stationary Engineer, you will manage and oversee mechanical equipment that provides utilities for buildings and industrial processes, ensuring equipment and machinery are maintained and operated within defined standards to support the mission and vision of FMDC. This position offers potential for long-term career growth and is classified as a Senior Specialized Trades Worker within the Office of Administration Division of Facilities Management, Design, and Construction (OA-FMDC), supporting the Operations Team.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize excellent customer service for a diverse network of internal and external stakeholders, including internal teams, state agencies, state officials, contractors, and the public.
• Perform high-quality, accurate work relating to the 24/7 operation, maintenance, repair, and oversight of boilers, chillers, high-pressure steam plants, and other mechanical equipment.
• Ensure compliance with administrative tasks, including compiling reports on monthly utility usage, water sampling, testing, monitoring, and adjusting equipment, and ordering parts and supplies.
• Participate in operational administration, such as monitoring and accounting for inventory, recommending outside contractors, creating job specifications, preparing bids for approval, and monitoring work and equipment.
• Troubleshoot and repair equipment and machinery, completing preventative and corrective maintenance tasks as assigned.
• Follow all OA-FMDC health and safety protocols and OSHA standards to ensure facilities remain compliant with agency programmatic requirements.
• Answer emergency calls and occasionally travel to other facilities to provide coverage and assistance.
• Provide after-hours and emergency coverage at state facilities (e.g., severe weather, snow removal, water leaks, fire) to ensure facilities and grounds are properly maintained.
• Communicate, collaborate, and operate with integrity to build trust and positive rapport with stakeholders and the public.

Requirements

• 2-4 years of skilled experience.
• Ability to plan, manage, and execute numerous time-sensitive projects and tasks independently or as part of a team using specialized trade procedures, processes, regulations, and practices.
• Working knowledge of operations, maintenance, and repair of boilers, chillers, high-pressure steam plants, and other mechanical equipment, including generators, electronic controls, meters, pumps, and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
• Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex technical documentation and manuals to solve problems and provide resolution options.
• Ability to discern whether a project can be completed in-house or requires a contractor.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from Missouri or an adjacent state if residing outside Missouri.
• Safety-first mindset with considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• OSHA 10 and/or 30 certification preferred (FMDC can provide if needed).
• Excellent attendance, work ethic, attention to detail, and critical thinking skills.
• Successful background check results are required for employment.
• Authorization to work in the United States (no visa sponsorship provided).

Physical Demands

This position is physically demanding. Duties may include prolonged periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, or driving; climbing ladders; lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds; working in inclement weather; and working on uneven or elevated surfaces.
