Stationary Engineer

This position is only open to candidates who are permanent (not provisional) in the civil service title of Stationary Engineer.

About the Agency

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services, and provides subsidized child care vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention, placement, and programs for youth in the community.

The Division of Administration provides a wide range of support services throughout the agency to ensure all Divisions receive adequate and efficient support services to carry out their respective missions. The Division of Administration works collaboratively with many program areas offering internal resources and support necessary to function efficiently and effectively. The Division employs approximately 490 public employees and provides services in the areas of building maintenance, occupational safety and health, operational support, security, transportation, and print production. The Division also provides support to the Division of Youth and Family Justice (DYFJ) via nutrition and food services, construction, and facilities management for its two 24/7 Secure Detention facilities – Crossroads Juvenile Center (Brooklyn) and Horizon Juvenile Center (Bronx).

About the Role

We are seeking Stationary Engineers to operate, inspect, maintain, repair, test, and adjust various equipment at City-owned Detention Facilities. This role will be based at Crossroads Juvenile Center (Brooklyn) or Horizon Juvenile Center (Bronx), with the possibility of reassignment based on agency needs.

Facilities Overview

• Crossroads Juvenile Center, 17 Bristol Street, Brooklyn, NY: Opened in 1998, this 3-story building with a cellar sits on a 114,522.6 sq. ft. lot. It features a 30,150 sq. ft. building footprint and a gross floor area of 105,223.7 sq. ft.
• Horizon Juvenile Center, 560 Brook Avenue, Bronx, NY: Opened in 1998, this 2-story building with a cellar sits on a 142,000 sq. ft. lot. It has a 49,350 sq. ft. building footprint and a gross floor area of 97,000 sq. ft.

Both facilities are constructed of steel and masonry and include Mechanical Rooms, Laundry, Storage, Lockers, Offices, Dormitory Halls, Medical Offices, Dining Room, Gymnasium, Classrooms, Kitchen, Loading Dock, exterior courtyards, and outdoor playgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Conduct periodic inspections and perform minor repairs on equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks.
• Inspect low-pressure boilers in compliance with the unified inspection procedure established by the New York City Department of Buildings.
• Oversee a watch and direct subordinate personnel and/or vendors.
• Operate control consoles in control rooms, if required.
• Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts.
• Read meters, gauges, and other recording devices, and maintain accurate logs of the data.
• Maintain records and generate reports as needed.

Requirements

• A valid license for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Skills

• Certificate of Equivalent Instruction issued by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
• Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (Unlimited Capacity) issued by the New York City Fire Department.
• City-Wide Standpipe Certificate issued by the New York Fire Department (S13).
• City-Wide Automatic Sprinkler Certificate issued by the New York Fire Department (S12).
• Interior Fire Alarm Certificate issued by the New York Fire Department (S95).
• Air Compressor Operation Certificate issued by the New York Fire Department (G35).

Candidates may also be required, within 90 days from the day of appointment, to obtain a valid Standpipe Certificate and Automatic Sprinkler Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department.

Pay

$591.20 daily.
