Stationary Engineer

About the Role

Under supervision, operate, repair, and maintain building systems, including general repairs to plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning, and other equipment.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and regulate boilers; observe meters and gauges to determine operating conditions of equipment.
• Check for water, gas, and combustible air leaks.
• Clean, paint, lubricate, service, and perform minor adjustments, repairs, and preventative maintenance on equipment.
• Use blueprints, diagrams, schematic drawings, and maintenance manuals to locate and resolve electrical, plumbing, and mechanical issues.
• Inspect and maintain sterilizers, oxygen equipment, and other hospital equipment.
• Repair HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other systems.
• Monitor air conditioning, heating, ventilation, airflow, and pneumatic tube systems; initiate corrective actions as needed.
• Clean boiler rooms, boilers, and related equipment.
• Check, maintain, repair, and operate emergency generators.
• Service and operate water softeners.
• Monitor service call/work order systems, prioritize tasks, and dispatch appropriate personnel.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
• Keep supervisors informed about assignment status, emergencies, safety issues, and other operational concerns.
• Operate, maintain, and assist with overhauls of cooling systems and water towers.
• Overhaul and repair pumps.
• Perform safety checks on boilers and other equipment.
• Conduct water tests, analyze samples, and apply necessary treatments.
• Notify department heads, nursing supervisors, and staff of power interruptions.
• Recommend complex repairs to be handled by other County staff or contractors.
• Assist in training less experienced workers.
• Serve as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) when required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education & Experience

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Four years of experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, service, and repair of hot water, low-pressure, and high-pressure steam boilers and related equipment.

Special Requirements

• Obtain and maintain a Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certificate from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency within six months of appointment (or vacate the position if certification is unavailable).
• Ability to travel to alternate work locations; valid California driver’s license required prior to appointment.
• Designated as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW); must complete assigned DSW training and return to work during emergencies as ordered.

Knowledge

• Various boiler manufacturers, models, and operation of high and low-pressure steam boilers, including applicable regulations.
• Safety precautions and hazards of pressure vessels and lines.
• Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards for hospital equipment (if assigned to the County Health System).
• Federal and State requirements for handling hazardous chemicals, including asbestos.
• Emergency power systems.
• Electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems for large buildings.
• Methods for operating and maintaining closed-loop heating and cooling systems.
• Repair and maintenance techniques for mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Common computer systems and applications.
• Safe use of tools and equipment for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs.

Abilities

• Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair high and low-pressure steam boilers, HVAC systems, water treatment equipment, plumbing fixtures, electrical motors, and ancillary equipment.
• Interpret and apply regulations affecting work activities, procedures, and policies.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematic drawings, and maintenance manuals.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse individuals and groups.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, the public, and other agencies.
• Respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies.
• Manage and operate generator units during power outages.
• Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.
• Follow written and oral instructions.

Physical Requirements

• Lift and/or move equipment and objects up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
• Work in small, confined spaces.
• Climb ladders.
• Perform manual tasks such as pushing, pulling, and grasping.
• Work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours as needed.
