About the role

Sky Meadows State Park is seeking an outgoing, energetic, and responsible Interpretive Ranger to interface with guests and facilitate programs that further the park’s interpretive mission as part of the Visitor Experience team. Interpretive Rangers create and execute meaningful experiences that connect visitors and community members to the natural, historical, and cultural resources preserved by the park. The role requires effective task prioritization, creativity, and collaboration with volunteers and park staff to continuously organize and improve park amenities and offerings.

Responsibilities

• Develop, coordinate, and facilitate interpretive programs and educational outreach, including history programs, guided nature experiences, and special events.
• Communicate and collaborate regularly with the public, schools, scout groups, local organizations, volunteers, and park staff.
• Maintain interpretive supplies to ensure they are in good working order.
• Contribute to the creative development of interpretive visual aids and literature (e.g., fliers and brochures).
• Keep accurate records, update digital databases, and participate in planning endeavors.
• Conduct research into relevant historical and environmental topics to improve foundational interpretive knowledge.
• Assist with the daily care of exhibit animals to ensure the health and well-being of reptile ambassadors.

Requirements

• Ability to develop, organize, and facilitate natural, cultural, and historical programs and events for all ages.
• Comfort with public speaking and excellent customer service skills.
• Friendly, outgoing, and able to work unsupervised or as part of a team.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
• Willingness to attend mandatory, paid trainings for OSHA/State compliance.
• Willingness to work shift work, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Experience in biology, history, parks and recreation, elementary education, and/or wildlife studies.
• Experience in natural and/or historical interpretation, including knowledge of Virginia history, ecology, and local flora and fauna.

Pay

Hourly range: $13.75 – $15.00.

Schedule

Able to work a scheduled shift of 2–3 days per week.

  • 50% off cabins (up to three bedrooms) outside the Memorial Day–Labor Day season for up to 14 nights (two-night minimum required).
  • Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts included; one-night yurt stays receive a 25% discount.

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check, I-9 verification, and possession of a valid driver’s license. Wage/seasonal positions are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30 and are not eligible for full-time benefits.
