Startup Accounting Manager
About the role
Togetherhood is a mission-driven organization that partners with schools and community organizations to provide exceptional after-school programs, workshops, and educational experiences through a network of teaching artists and enrichment providers. We currently operate in New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington D.C., with plans to expand nationwide.
What You'll Own
Accounting (Approximately 50%): Own the monthly close in QuickBooks Online, prepare monthly financial statements, manage accounts payable using Tipalti, monitor accounts receivable using Upflow, and coordinate with our external CPA on tax filings, year-end close, and audits.
Revenue Operations (Approximately 25%): Calculate and administer sales commissions, work with the Department of Education for metros in which we operate to ensure smooth invoicing, collections, and vendor payments, and maintain commission models and supporting documentation.
Operations & Systems (Approximately 25%): Help operationalize expansion into new markets, coordinate vendor onboarding and compliance requirements with school districts and government agencies, and improve workflows across finance, operations, and customer success.
What We're Looking For
3–7 years of accounting experience in a small or growing business
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. (CPA or CPA candidate is a strong plus)
Strong QuickBooks Online experience
Strong analytical thinking: you can break down a problem, work with data, and reason toward a clear answer
Exceptional Excel or Google Sheets skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial analysis
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Excellent email communication and rapport: you are highly responsive, professional, and able to be firm about payment terms while staying friendly and building trust with partners
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Curiosity and a desire to improve systems and processes
Comfort working across multiple functions in a growing company
Bonus Points
Experience with: HubSpot, Tipalti, Upflow, Stripe, Sales commission administration, Business process automation, AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, or Gemini to improve productivity and automate recurring work
