Stand-up comedian

A stand-up comedian writes and performs original comic material for live audiences, developing a personal voice, point of view, and act through constant writing and stage time. Much of the craft is iterative: testing jokes, refining wording and timing, and reading how rooms respond night after night. Performance is live and unrepeatable — comedians adapt in the moment to the crowd, hecklers, and the room's energy. The career is entrepreneurial and self-directed, built over years through clubs, tours, and increasingly recorded and online specials.
