Staff WiFi Engineer
About the role
We’re looking for WiFi experts to design and develop WiFi software in our Linux-based networking system, aiming to create the best connectivity experience found in any car. You’ll work on a breakthrough new system for vehicle software and communications, collaborating closely with hardware, application, and cloud teams to meet tough power, signal, and reliability requirements.
Responsibilities
- Develop WiFi software for a Linux-based networking system in vehicles.
- Collaborate with hardware teams to meet power, signal, and reliability requirements.
- Work with application and cloud teams to ensure end-to-end reliability and performance.
- Triage and debug end-to-end WiFi issues, including packet capture, latency characterization, and analysis of connection and roaming failures.
- Design and implement features at the junction of the WiFi stack and operating system/user features, such as configuration management, network configuration, power management, or tethering.
Requirements
- Proficiency in Linux/POSIX systems and networking fundamentals across the stack—from drivers through applications.
- Experience shipping software at the intersection of the WiFi stack and operating system/user features (e.g., configuration management, network configuration, power management, or tethering).
- Familiarity with userspace services that configure and operate WiFi, such as wpa_supplicant, cfg80211/nl80211, hostap, NetworkManager, or ConnMan.
- Strong debugging skills, including packet capture, latency analysis, and troubleshooting connection and roaming failures.
- Proficiency in at least one of the following languages: C, C++, or Java.
- BS/MS/PhD in computer science or electrical engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of software development experience.
- A deep drive to make WiFi work perfectly, regardless of hardware or environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience collaborating with radio and operating system vendors to debug issues.
- Experience with Android WiFi and connectivity.
- Work with WiFi interoperability across protocol generations, security, and roaming standards.
- Ability to build power-aware systems by balancing reliability and power consumption via scanning/roaming policies and suspend/resume behavior, supported by experience measuring power consumption.
- Experience with lab/field testers, test automation, and certification/interoperability efforts.
- Knowledge of systems that can affect WiFi performance, such as Bluetooth coexistence at the OS level.
- Understanding of layer 1 and layer 2 issues that impact performance.
- Ability to collaborate with hardware engineers to debug antenna and power issues.
