The Role
At QuidelOrtho, we’re advancing the power of diagnostics for a healthier future for all. Join our mission as a Staff Systems Engineer supporting R&D Automation and Middleware. In this role, you will provide technical systems leadership to deliver new or significantly enhanced products and features across our portfolio, partnering closely with internal teams and external collaborators.
Responsibilities
- Single point of contact for function to the project team and is responsible for planning and execution control for R&D deliverables.
- Responsible for resource commitments to project leadership, and holding functional leaders accountable to resource commitments.
- Conceives plans, and implements solutions to technical problems new designs, equipment and process development.
- Establishes R&D milestones and monitors adherence to master plans and schedules.
- Identifies program challenges/risks and obtains solutions to allocation of resources or changing specifications.
- Delivers critical, timely communications to the business (Head of R&D, and Project Leader) on project execution.
- Identifies critical dependences, risks and contingency plans.
- Proactively monitors progress, anticipating the effect of dependencies on schedule, cost, etc.
- Applies extensive technical expertise within one of the following engineering disciplines, and has a working awareness of other related disciplines: Laboratory Automation, Robotics, Informatics, Software, middleware applications, Laboratory Information Systems, Serial and network Communications, Artificial Intelligence and understands the inter-relationship of multiple disciplines.
- Ensures the accurate recording of data, according to defined engineering practices and policies, for the making of decisions as.
- Solves various technical problems of both a specific and complex nature.
- Contributes to output that improve development cycle time, ensure the quality of data analysis, and further the achievement of specific project goals related to critical company objectives.
- Acts independently, without day-to-day direction, on execution of assigned activities.
- Establishes and maintains partner relations at the technical level.
The Individual
- This position is not currently eligible for visa sponsorship.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, math, applied sciences or related field.
- Typically requires 10+ years of experience with BS or equivalent work experience, or 7+ years with MS.
- Experience with Laboratory Automation systems and Clinical-Chemistry/Immuno-Assay analyzers.
- Experience with Middleware Applications or similar Software.
- Experience with product development tools, Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.).
- Demonstrated commitment to quality work.
- Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills required including communication with business partners.
- Strong analytical capabilities, including quantitative and qualitative assessment skills, insight generation and critical thinking skills.
- Self-initiator, results driven and action & detail oriented.
- Curiosity.
Travel
Travel 10% (including Western Europe and potentially China/Japan).
Preferred Experience
- With Artificial Intelligence, Genetic algorithms, Large Language Models.
- Software programming, e.g. Python.
The Key Working Relationships
- Internal Partners: Works cross-functionally: Marketing, Design Quality, Regulatory, Clinical Affairs, IT, Global Service Organization, Technical Publication, Supply Chian, Operations and Project Management.
- External Partners: Various Automation and Middleware partners in accordance with Business Unit strategy.
The Work Environment
- No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required.
- 30% of time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone.
- 70% of the time at the desk on computer, doing analytical work.
- Frequent work in a BL-2 Lab environment will require wearing of approved and provided clothing and eye protection.
Physical Demands
- Most of the work is to be performed in an office-type open space environment using laptop computers and accessories (sitting or standing).
- Occasional lifting/carrying of computers and accessories or similar items.
Salary Transparency
- The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data.
- At QuidelOrtho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
- The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $130,000 and is bonus eligible.
