Staff Software Engineer, USA & Canada Regional Experience
About the role
Remitly's US and Canada Regional Experience teams grow the remittance send business by improving the customer experience across the moments that matter most. Engineers on these teams apply a full-stack skillset to the customer challenges most critical for growing Remitly's US and Canada send business. This Staff Engineer will work across both regional teams, setting the technical direction engineers build on. The US team has ambitious plans targeting Latin America and other critical receive regions, alongside Canada's growth priorities in Asia, which this hire will help drive across both regions.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction and architecture of the US and Canada regional experiences – from customer-facing web and mobile surfaces to the services and integrations they depend on – taking the lead on large, cross-team initiatives.
- Partner with product, design, analytics, and engineering leaders across both regions to shape roadmaps.
- Advise domain-level planning and lead design reviews across the regional teams.
- Make AI-native engineering a durable practice across the teams: set the bar, own the teams' automation as a maintained portfolio, and extend those standards to teams we work closely with.
- Evolve engineering excellence standards (reliability, observability, security, quality) and resolve the long-standing problems that limit scale before they become bottlenecks.
- Raise the engineering bar across both regions by mentoring engineers at multiple levels through design and code reviews, and expanding team knowledge and skills.
- Stay hands-on across TypeScript, React Native, Java/Kotlin, and Go; set the standard in code review.
- Report to the Senior Engineering Manager, Americas.
Requirements
- Strong computer science, web, and native app fundamentals, and a command of design patterns and distributed-systems concepts.
- 10+ years of software development experience, including leading large, multi-team initiatives end to end.
- Advanced expertise in one or more of TypeScript, JavaScript, Kotlin, Java, or Go.
- 4+ years of React or React Native development experience.
- Experience leading team and cross-team design reviews, and designing for extensibility.
- Experience using AI throughout the software development lifecycle, and helping others apply it well.
- Excellent collaboration skills, with a track record of influencing across team boundaries.
Qualifications
- BS/MS in Computer Science or related field.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
- Experience with database systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB.
- Experience with microservices architecture and containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

Pay
The starting base salary range for this position is typically $208,000-$260,000. In the U.S., Remitly employees are shareholders in our Company and equity is part of our total compensation plan. Schedule
Corporate team members are expected to be in the office at least 50% of the time monthly, typically achieved by coming in three days a week. This creates a consistent, meaningful overlap that supports team norms and business needs. Managers also have the flexibility to set higher expectations based on their team's specific needs.
