About the role

This is a senior/staff IC role for someone who wants broad ownership across backend services, AI workflow execution, data modeling, integrations, and operational reliability. You will work directly with operations, product, and engineering leadership to turn ambiguous lender workflows into production systems. The scope is staff-level: the decisions you make here will shape the platform for years.

Technical Problem

Mortgage origination is a data-heavy workflow with thousands of fields, lender-specific rules, and a long list of external dependencies. The system has to handle documents, disclosures, underwriting, fraud checks, retries, backfills, access control, audit trails, and human review points. The hard part is not the model alone. It is the system around the model: evals, guardrails, retries, human override, auditability, and clean failure modes.

What You'll Own

  • AI workflow execution: build and ship multi-step agents that digitize lender operations without losing control over correctness, retries, or recovery paths.
  • Core backend services and APIs: own the services that support borrower-, loan officer-, and ops-facing product surfaces.
  • Third-party integrations: connect to lending-service providers for document generation, disclosures, automated underwriting, fraud prevention, and related workflow steps.
  • Data modeling: design and evolve Postgres schemas and GraphQL contracts for highly structured, high-field-count mortgage data.
  • Job processing and reliability: improve queueing, retries, observability, backfills, and operational tooling on AWS.
  • Security and auditability: strengthen access control, logging, retention, and traceability around sensitive borrower data.
  • Full-stack delivery: ship across client, server, and infrastructure when the cleanest solution crosses layers.
  • Team leverage: raise the bar on code review, testing, and mentoring so the team can move faster without accumulating fragility.

Who This Is For

  • You are likely a fit if you have:
  • 7+ years of engineering experience, including several years operating at senior level.
  • Owned systems end to end, not just a layer inside a larger platform.
  • Strong judgment in APIs, data modeling, and distributed systems.
  • Shipped software where observability, incident response, and maintainability mattered.
  • Experience working with non-deterministic AI systems, or the ability to build the reliability layer around them quickly.
  • Comfort working with sensitive personal data and regulated workflows.
  • The ability to turn ambiguous requirements into concrete architecture decisions.
  • Product instincts: you care about user workflows, not just service boundaries.
  • Interest in mentoring engineers and setting technical standards.
  • Experience with evals, experiment design, or dataset curation for AI products.
  • Comfort shipping full-stack systems from design through deployment when that is the right solution.

Tech Stack

  • Backend: TypeScript, Node.js, Express, Docker
  • Frontend: React
  • API layer: GraphQL / Apollo across client and server
  • Data: PostgreSQL
  • Infrastructure: AWS, including ECS, RDS, ElastiCache, Kafka, and Elasticsearch
  • Infrastructure as code: Terraform, used for 100% of infrastructure
  • Developer experience: generated TypeScript types from Postgres and GraphQL schemas, shared TS across the monorepo, temporary staging environments for every pull request, and production-like test utilities for end-to-end, integration, and performance coverage

Compensation and Logistics

  • Salary: $150K–$350K
  • Equity: competitive
  • Location: United States
  • Work model: remote, working U.S. hours
  • Employment: full-time
  • Visa support: visa transfers only
