THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own lending and payments inside our next-generation platform for home-improvement contractors: the system a contracting business runs on, end to end. At its core is a lending orchestration engine: homeowners apply for financing, and the platform routes their applications across a panel of lenders, returns real offers, handles consent and e-signature, and funds the project. Connected to it is payments, so contractors can also get paid directly. You will own this platform end to end: the orchestration, the lender and processor integrations, the money model, and the event flows that tie them together. Correctness and reliability are the product.
Responsibilities
- Lending Orchestration
- Own the lender-waterfall routing engine: rank lenders by dealer approval, project type, and eligibility rules, submit applications, catch declines, and re-route down the waterfall automatically.
- Build the two-stage application flow: a soft-pull prequalification that returns real offers, then the full application through consent, e-signature, close, and funding.
- Handle the full lifecycle including pended applications and stipulations: parse stipulation codes, drive the document-upload experience, resubmit, and reconcile status updates from each lender.
- Integrate a growing panel of lenders (API-ready first, then lenders that need a manual or file-based step) plus a credit bureau for soft pulls.
- Own dealer onboarding: a unified KYB and KYC payload submitted in parallel to lenders, with per-lender approval driving the financing options a dealer can offer.
- Payments and Money Model
- Integrate the payment facilitator (hosted payment page, card tokenization, pay and refund) so contractors can collect directly, and connect it to the rest of the platform.
- Design the money model with correctness first: integer-cents arithmetic, reconciliation, idempotency, and auditability across every flow.
- Build toward deeper payments and financing capabilities over time, including bringing more of underwriting or facilitation in-house.
- Platform, Integrations, and Data Model
- The platform as event-driven flows: webhooks, queues, scheduled jobs, retries, and reconciliation, with first-class observability.
- Own a rules and eligibility engine and the configuration that lenders and admins use to control routing, disclosures, and thresholds.
- Build the lender and admin portals and reporting: live application status, approval and funding rates, and win-loss insights.
- Handle sensitive data with care: KYC, KYB, SSN, and signed documents, encrypted and access-controlled.
- AI-Native Engineering
- Delegate whole features to autonomous agents, work across several in parallel, and review and direct their output rather than hand-typing most of the code.
- Build and improve what makes agentic development work here: the skills architecture, MCP integrations, prompts, specs, and guardrails that let agents ship safely.
- Codify context and patterns so both engineers and agents move faster, and keep raising the ceiling for what can be delegated to AI.
- Set the standard for where to trust agents, where to keep a human in the loop, and how to hold quality high while moving at agent speed.
- Team Direction and Mentorship
- Direct the day-to-day technical work of the augmentation engineers on the platform: set the patterns, review the work, and own the quality of everything that ships, including the code you did not write yourself.
- Level up the engineers around you through code review, pairing, and design discussions.
- Raise the technical bar and help build a high-performing engineering team.
- Serve as the engineering point of contact between the fintech business team, platform engineering, and the rest of Leap engineering.
- Collaborate closely across product, engineering, and infrastructure.
Requirements
- Minimum of Associate’s Degree, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with real fintech depth in lending, payments, or both.
- A track record of shipping: merged, working software in front of customers is your unit of progress, and you can point to what you shipped recently.
- You have built systems that integrate third-party financial APIs with complex asynchronous flows: applications, decisioning, webhooks, stipulations, e-signature, and disbursement.
- You think natively about money-correctness, idempotency, reconciliation, and handling sensitive data (PII, SSN).
- Deep TypeScript and PostgreSQL: Node and Express on the backend, React on the frontend, with strong relational data modeling and migration management.
- Experience with event-driven architectures (queues, webhooks, scheduled jobs) and containerized AWS deployments.
- Experience directing the work of other engineers, as a tech lead, technical anchor, or owner of an extended or augmentation team: you set direction and hold a quality bar for code you did not write yourself.
- Strong written communication: you can author clear design documents and ADRs.
- AI is central to how you personally ship, and you already work at a high level of autonomy with it: you hand whole tasks to agents, coordinate several at once, and build the workflows that make them effective. This is a hard requirement, and we will ask you to show us how you work.
Preferred Skills
- Consumer lending, loan origination, or point-of-sale financing systems.
- Payment processing or payment-facilitator (PayFac) experience: tokenization, card and ACH, payouts, refunds, and disputes.
- Experience taking a platform build to production maturity and owning it thereafter.
- Familiarity with KYC and KYB, credit bureau integrations, and PCI-sensitive flows.
- Rules or decisioning engines, and reporting or analytics for financial data.
- Home-services, field-service, or contractor SaaS domain.
Compensation
Compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications. Pay Range: $200,000 - $215,000 USD
