Staff Software Engineer - Java/Kotlin, Distributed Systems

About the role
Tenable is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our core product engineering team, focused on designing, developing, and maintaining cloud-based, state-of-the-art search solutions on top of our customers' ever-evolving infrastructure in a scalable way.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will implement and maintain a highly scalable, highly reliable cloud-native user interface and underlying microservices using modern technologies and programming languages. This role centers on crafting the services that enable data ingestion, storage, querying, and retrieval at scale—building the reliable and efficient infrastructure that powers the entire data ecosystem.
- Build and manage services around data handling, including ingestion, storage, and retrieval
- Architect, design, and implement features to drive the overall platform architecture
- Drive ongoing innovation of Tenable’s global cloud architecture and distributed systems
- Collaborate with Product Managers, engineers, designers, and stakeholders to iterate on products
- Support and mentor peers inside and outside your team
- Continuously improve the tech stack, product features, and engineering practices
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience in enterprise development, with leadership aspirations
- Experience in database performance tuning, schema design, and query optimization in distributed microservice architectures
- Proficiency in Java or Kotlin, with a willingness to learn new languages
- Experience developing in containerized microservice architectures (Kubernetes)
- Experience building core libraries, infrastructure, or search engines
- Accountability for software behavior in production
- Experience coaching and leading mid-level and junior staff on technical projects
- Agile team experience and enthusiasm for cross-team collaboration
- Ability to work independently and drive projects as needed
- Experience with operational datastores, Kafka, or similar technologies
- Desire to continuously learn and adopt new technologies
B.S. degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience. Cross-platform development is a plus.

Pay
US Pay Range: $188,000—$250,666.67 USD. Compensation depends on qualifications, skills, location, and experience. Employees are also eligible for variable compensation (bonus for non-sales roles) based on company and individual performance.
