Staff Software Engineer- Eng
About the role
Our team is a component of a reliable, high-quality data platform that empowers customers with trusted, timely workforce insights. Our mission is to build scalable, observable, and resilient data pipelines that uphold the highest standards of engineering excellence. Through automation, transparency, and continuous improvement, we ensure data flows with integrity and precision, enabling customers to make confident, data-driven decisions about their people and their business.
You have a passion for data, building data platforms, and enjoy solving complex data problems with modern, cloud-based technologies. You are naturally curious, enjoy learning new technologies, and seek out efficient solutions without producing complicated code. You understand the value of delivering value to the customer quickly and welcome incremental feedback. You are technically savvy and stay up to date on the latest advances in technology in your field. You can lead and mentor junior data engineers and show them the ropes. You can take high-level direction and break it down into a design and implementation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain data extraction pipelines in both streaming and batch methodologies, leveraging tools such as Cloud Composer, Cloud Dataflow, Airflow, Apache Beam, Cloud Functions, Cloud Pub Sub, and Kafka.
- Manage automated deployments using technologies such as Terraform, GCloud CLI, Docker, Bash, Humanitec, Jenkins, and GitHub Actions.
- Leverage AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code or Codex) to accelerate software development, including generating production-ready code, refactoring existing systems, debugging complex issues, and improving engineering throughput while maintaining code quality, security, and architectural standards.
- Design security-first data pipelines with privacy-preserving transformations.
- Implement test automation, data quality, and observability for pipelines using technologies such as TestNG, JUnit, PyTest, Terratest, and TestRail, ensuring test code coverage, regression tests, and edge case handling.
- Set up and monitor data loads in test and production environments, handle production support, and perform performance tuning and optimization.
- Lead and participate in technical discussions, peer review code, mentor junior developers, and contribute to technical documentation and knowledge bases.
- Communicate both technically and with business stakeholders.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience handling database development, BI development, ETL development, and API data integrations, including technical architectures, infrastructure components, reporting, and analytical tools.
- 8+ years of experience in programming languages on the JVM—Java, Scala, or Kotlin.
- Deep experience in developing and maintaining data extraction pipelines for both streaming and batch processing.
- Experience managing automated deployments using tools like Terraform, GCloud CLI, Docker, Bash, Humanitec, Jenkins, and GitHub Actions.
- Experience designing security-first data pipelines with privacy-preserving transformations.
- Deep experience in test automation, data quality, and observability for pipelines.
- Solid experience in data analysis, transformation, and anomaly handling.
Qualifications
- Proficient in working with SQL and NoSQL databases such as BigQuery, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, and MongoDB.
- Proficient with cloud infrastructure such as GCP, Azure, or AWS.
- Understanding of source control technologies such as Git or SVN.
- Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
- High degree of self-motivation to learn new methodologies that enhance job performance.
- Ability to work within a team and manage a dynamic environment with rapidly changing priorities.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
