Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Ruby)

About the role

Join the Incidents and Inspections team within Procore's Quality & Safety (Q&S) group as a Staff Software Engineer. You'll develop products that impact construction projects worldwide, including hospitals, homes, sports stadiums, and schools. The Q&S team builds tools for managing Incidents, Inspections, Observations, and Punch Lists, translating customer needs into SaaS solutions that enhance job site safety and project efficiency.

As the technical lead, you'll own the architecture and direction of scalable backend systems for customer-facing applications built on Procore's Ruby on Rails monolith. Your expertise in distributed systems, test-driven development, and modern web development will drive technical decisions and extend your influence across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Master generative AI tools and agentic workflows, moving beyond usage to actively building the agentic future of construction.
• Serve as the technical lead for the Incidents and Inspections team by setting engineering direction, owning architecture, and translating customer needs into scalable SaaS solutions.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of features built on Procore’s Ruby on Rails monolith.
• Drive sound technical decisions and de-risk complex work while collaborating with partner teams across the Q&S product suite and broader engineering organization.
• Establish and champion high-quality development standards to ensure code maintainability, system reliability, and long-term scalability.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing on complex problems, and raising the engineering bar.
• Optimize application performance and resilience, and resolve technical debt and systemic risks before they impact customers.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering fundamentals, including strong system design skills.
• Deep proficiency in backend development with Ruby on Rails, including hands-on experience in a large, mature Rails monolith.
• Proven technical leadership, with a track record of serving as a tech lead and influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team.
• Experience with large-scale systems, including managing platforms and infrastructure supporting thousands of hosts and millions of users.
• Experience building and maintaining modern CI/CD systems in a large-scale environment.
• Ability to balance immediate business needs with strategic, long-term technical investments and communicate architectural trade-offs effectively.
• Experience with modern web development lifecycle tools, including testing, staging, deploying, and monitoring.
• Strong collaborative and communication skills, with a knack for working effectively across teams.

Benefits

• Base pay range: $168,560 – $231,770 USD annually.
• Eligibility for Equity Compensation and/or Bonus Incentive Compensation.

This position is based in Procore’s Austin, TX office and reports to a Senior Manager, Software Engineering.
