Staff Software Engineer
About the role
The Staff Software Engineer will define and own the technical strategy for test infrastructure across Coinbase engineering, focusing on feedback speed as a core design constraint. They will build and operate core test infrastructure services, reduce the time between code changes and trustworthy test results, improve test reliability, and partner with engineering teams to identify bottlenecks and turn them into platform improvements.
Responsibilities
- Define and own the technical strategy for test infrastructure across Coinbase engineering, with feedback speed as a core design constraint.
- Build and operate core test infrastructure services, including test orchestration, smart test selection, sharding, flaky-test detection, and test result analysis.
- Reduce the time between code changes and trustworthy test results.
- Improve test reliability so engineers can depend on signals without reruns or second-guessing outcomes.
- Own systems end to end, including architecture, observability, SLOs, and on-call operations.
- Partner with engineering teams across Coinbase to identify bottlenecks and turn them into platform improvements.
- Mentor engineers, raise technical standards, and shape how the organization approaches test infrastructure.
Requirements
- 10+ years building and operating production software, with strong distributed systems fundamentals and proficiency in Go or a similar language.
- Track record of defining and delivering technical strategy for foundational systems that other teams depend on.
- Deep experience in test infrastructure, including test execution at scale, flaky-test detection, test selection, sharding, or test result analysis.
- Strong operational instincts with a focus on reliability, security, and observability.
- Customer-focused mindset, with success measured by impact on the engineers who depend on your systems.
- Familiarity with test selection approaches and the tradeoffs between speed and coverage.
- Experience operating at scale with Kubernetes, AWS, GitHub Actions, Terraform, and containers.
- Experience with observability and performance tooling such as Datadog, especially for distributed test execution.
- Curiosity about crypto or web3; experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments is a plus.
- Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
Qualifications
- Experience with AI and generative AI technologies, including responsible usage and oversight.
Skills
- Generative AI skills, particularly in the context of improving test infrastructure and workflows.
