Staff Scientist

About the role

As a CAS Global Staff Scientist at Johnson Matthey, you’ll join a world leader in platinum group metals with over 200 years of history. Using advanced metals chemistry, you’ll help tackle global challenges—cutting emissions, powering modern life, and supporting life-saving technologies—by applying, refining, and recycling metals to create a healthier, more sustainable, circular future.

Responsibilities

• Lead IDEA and EVALUATE phase NPI workstreams aligned to CAS strategy and business objectives.
• Design and deliver research programmes to develop new catalysts, materials, and emission control technologies.
• Manage project budgets, milestones, risks, and phase reviews while ensuring effective stakeholder communication.
• Build strong partnerships across global development hubs, commercial teams, business development, and operations.
• Support customer engagement through technical presentations, training, and advanced catalyst system design guidance.
• Contribute to external collaborations, including university research programmes and future technology opportunities.

Requirements

• PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, ElectroChemistry, Electro Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline, or a Bachelor's degree with relevant industry experience.
• Strong technical expertise in heterogeneous catalysis.
• Hands-on experience in catalyst preparation, catalytic reaction testing, and material characterisation.
• Excellent analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail.
• Strong planning and organisational capabilities, with experience managing complex research projects.
• Self-motivated approach with the ability to collaborate effectively across global and multicultural teams.
