About the role

We are currently searching for a Staff Scientist to provide laboratory leadership and support services to perform interdisciplinary and collaborative research from bench to bedside with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Combine biochemical, molecular, cellular, genetic, and quantitative approaches to investigate fundamental biological processes across a range of organisms, including fish, flies, mice, mammals, microbes, and viruses.
  • Gain an understanding on how cells sense, respond, and adapt to a variety of stress conditions, including nutrient deprivation, organelle damage, and pathogen infection.
  • Address how alterations in mTOR, TFEB, TFE3, and lysosomal function lead to human disease.
  • Seek to identify potential sites for therapeutic intervention suitable for further evaluation in translational and clinical research efforts.
  • Contribute to training and mentoring of all laboratory members.

Requirements

  • PhD with at least TWO (2) years of postdoctoral research experience in molecular biology, cellular biology, biochemistry, or related field OR
  • Master’s degree with at least FIVE (5) years of intensive, hands-on research experience in molecular biology, cellular biology, biochemistry, or related field in lieu of PhD.

Qualifications

  • Mastery of Zebrafish models with skills such as husbandry, genetic crossing, and genotyping protocols.
  • Strong publication record.
  • Experience working with other animal models.
  • Expertise in cellular biology and microscopy imaging.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD Public Trust.

Skills

  • Advanced skills in light microscopy are strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of organelle cell biology (lysosomes, autophagy, intracellular trafficking), and a commitment to conducting related high-quality research.
  • Able to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff training and mentoring.

Pay

The annual salary range for this position is $98,000.00-$163,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

Schedule

This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.
